Its A Story * All About US *

What Maze & Mirth Is

Maze & Mirth is an artist-owned gallery founded by two people who took the long way around. An army communications specialist who never stopped drawing mazes. A painter who set down her brushes at sixteen and picked them back up twenty-four years later. Together they built something neither could have made alone - a place where art is honest, personal, and meaningful.

Meet the Artists

ABOUT MAZE & MIRTH

Maze & Mirth Art Gallery & Museum is the shared creative world of artists John Scrudder and Melanie Scrudder. They met in 2012 on a blind date that began in a coffee shop, ended in a sports bar, and finished at 3 a.m. in a parking lot. He kissed her goodnight, walked away - then ran back and kissed her again. They fell in love that night. They've been building something together ever since.

The Gap

Both artists spent years living in the space between who they were and who they would become. John received a partial scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design at seventeen, but chose a different path and enlisted in the United States Army instead, serving eleven years in Special Forces Group, where he still works today but as a civilian. John spent years quietly drawing intricate maze patterns on mirrors, found objects, and whatever surfaces were nearby. Melanie entered an art contest at the Art Council of Fayetteville at sixteen and was told she wasn't ready. She set down her brushes - and went out and lived. She became a mother, worked hard from an early age, struggled and grew, and gathered the kind of lived experience that art is actually made from.

A Return to a New Beginning

In 2019, John applied to the Art Council of Fayetteville's 10x1010 ehibition - ten artists, ten feet of gallery space. He was selected. For the first time, his maze drawings stepped off private surfaces and onto a gallery wall.

Melanie returned to painting at forty, earned her art degree, and in 2024 presented a solo exhibition at the Art Council Gallery that had once turned her away. She filled its walls with over 30 art pieces alive with color, memory, and a life fully lived.

Maze & Mirth grew from that shared journey.

The maze is John - structured, patient, always searching for the path forward.

The mirth is Melanie - joyful, expressive, luminous with color.

While the protective, transparent shield arrived broken, customer service had instantly reacted and, after a week, I had a new one and could happily put my picture on the wall. Recommend.

I ordered a large frame from postery that unfortunately had a little bit of damage when it arrived. I contacted customer services and they arranged for a new one to be sent the same day. Very pleased with the service and the frame seems to be a very good quality. Will definitely be ordering again.

Frames were the best price after shopping around. On arrival, they were securely packaged. Muted gold slim frame, the acrylic front is very clear and easy to use rear spring turn clips to secure the backing in place.
